10 million people expected to participate in first-ever global Surya Namaskar programme

Around 10 million people are expected to take part in the first global demonstration of Surya Namaskar organised by the Ministry of Ayush in Makar Sankranti today to mark the sun’s journey to the northern hemisphere. Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to address the people and deliver his message on Surya Namaskar.

From 7am to 7.30am, the DD National will perform up to 13 rounds of Live Surya Namaskar, during which leading yoga gurus and masters from global institutions will share their messages. In view of the increasing number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases, the Ministry of Ayush recommends performing “Surya Namaskar” at home and uploading the video on the link used for registration.

“During the auspicious days of Makar Sankranti and the celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of AYUSH will host the first-ever global Surya Namaskar demonstration programme, which will be attended by around 10 million people,” the ministry said in a statement on Thursday said in.

As the main source of energy, the ministry stressed that the sun is not only essential for the continuation of the food chain, but also energizes the mind and body of human beings. It states that exposure to sunlight provides the body with vitamin D, which is widely recommended by all medical departments around the world.

“The massive Surya Namaskar demonstration is also intended to convey the message of climate change and global warming. In today’s world, where climate awareness is imperative, implementing solar electronic energy (green energy) in everyday life will significantly reduce the carbon emissions that threaten the planet ,” it added.

Leading yoga institutes, Yoga Association of India, National Federation of Yoga Exercises, Yoga Accreditation Council, FIT India and many government and NGOs will participate in this global initiative.
