19-year-old shooter Avani becomes first Indian woman to win a gold medal at Paralympics

In the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, she has won the gold medal in the shooting women’s 10m air rifle SH1 event. This is India’s first gold medal in these games.

Avani Lekhara gave this medal to the country. The 19-year-old Lakheda won the medal by securing a score of 249.6 in the final, which is the world record at the Paralympic Games.

19-year-old Avani Lakheda is playing in Paralympic Games for the first time and she is the first Indian woman to win gold in these Games.

Avani has become the fourth Indian player to win a gold medal in the Paralympic Games. Before him, swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) in javelin throw, and Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016) in high jump have achieved this feat. She is the first Indian woman to win gold in the Paralympics.

Avni Lakheda was once quite healthy but one day in the year 2012, she was going somewhere with her father in a car. The car met with an accident and caused injury to Avni’s spinal cord. Due to this injury, she cannot stand on her feet.
