Two people were killed in a fire at the Kamala Building in Nana Chowk, Tardeo, Mumbai, on Saturday morning. Nineteen other people were injured in the incident. A level 3 fire was reported on the 18th floor of the 20-story building.
The blaze was reported at 7:28 a.m. and declared a level 3 at 8:10 a.m., according to the fire department.
The department said 13 fire engines and seven large tankers had been deployed to contain the blaze.
The wounded were taken to Bhatia and Nair hospitals; doctors at Nair Hospital said two people had died.
“Six elderly people need oxygen support systems. The fire is under control but there is a lot of smoke,” Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar told reporters.
Maharashtra BJP chairman Mangal Prabhat Lodha called it an “unfortunate event”.
Fifteen injured have been taken to Bhatia Hospital, with three in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 12 in the general ward and four in Nair Hospital.
