The dead were identified as Shyamal Bauri, Pinki Bauri, Anna Bauri and Natabar Bauri. Another villager was injured.

The family lives in a village near the mine. Relatives of the victims, Dulal Bauri, said their family went into the mine to mine coal to make a living.

“We got word that the mine had collapsed and they were buried. Later their bodies were recovered,” Dulal Bauri said.

The ruling Trinamool MP Narendranath Chakraborty said the mine was dangerous because it was not fenced.
“It’s at least 300 feet deep. It’s very dangerous. The mine is about 150-200 feet from a river where children often play,” Chakraborty said.

BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari has called for the immediate arrest of the mine owners.
