The chief executives of major U.S. passenger and cargo airlines warned on Monday of an imminent “catastrophic” aviation crisis as AT&T and Verizon deploy new 5G services in less than 36 hours.

The airline warned that the new C-band 5G service set to begin Wednesday could leave a large number of wide-body planes out of service, “may leave tens of thousands of Americans stranded overseas” and cause “chaos” for U.S. flights.

“Unless our major hubs are cleared to fly, the vast majority of travel and The shipping public will essentially be grounded.” Reuters.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned that potential interference could affect sensitive aircraft instruments, such as the altimeter, and severely hinder low-visibility operations.

“This means that on a day like yesterday, more than 1,100 flights and 100,000 passengers will be cancelled, diverted or delayed,” the letter warned.
