Adding apples and chocolates to your diet can fix leaky gut issue

A recent study found that adding up to three servings of apple, cocoa, dark chocolate, green tea, cranberry, orange or pomegranate juice a day can improve intestinal permeability and possibly solve the problem of intestinal leakage. These foods are rich in polyphenols, which help improve intestinal health. The results of the study were published in the journal “Clinical Nutrition”.

The research was led by Cristina Andres-Lacueva, a professor and head of the Biomarker and Nutrition Research Group in the School of Pharmacy and Food Sciences. The results show that eating up to three servings of apple, cocoa, dark chocolate, green tea, cranberry, orange or pomegranate juice per day can improve intestinal permeability when certain changes in the intestinal microbiota occur.

According to experts Gregorio Peron and Tomas Merono (UB-INSA and CIBERFES), “We have studied the existing relationship between dietary element metabolism, microbiota and intestinal permeability by analyzing changes caused by rich polyphenols. We study the diet of the participants’ microbiota and test the results of their intestinal barrier improvement.”

Analysis of plasma and stool samples showed an increase in the serum metabolome associated with the intake of polyphenols. “For example, theobromine and methylxanthines from cocoa and green tea are positively correlated with butyrate-producing bacteria (a fatty acid in the gut flora), while zonulin, a protein related to intestinal permeability, is negatively correlated. “, the author pointed out.
