Following the death of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, India declared one day of national mourning on Saturday.
According to a communication issued by the Union Home Ministry to all states and union territories on Friday, the Government of India has decided to observe one day of national mourning on May 14 as a mark of respect for the departed dignitary.
The national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is flown regularly on the day of mourning, and there will be no official entertainment, according to the communication.
Sheikh Khalifa died on Friday after a long illness. He was 73. He was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding president.
From November 3, 2004, he was the President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi. His father, who served as the UAE’s first president from 1971 until his death on November 2, 2004, was elected to succeed him.
