RPN Singh, one of the most prominent leaders of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, quit the party today and announced his switch to the BJP ahead of next month’s state elections.
Shortly after tweeting his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi, RPN Singh tweeted about the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Chairman JP Nada and Home Minister Amit Shah “New Beginning” under. He will likely pick Prath Prix from the district from his stronghold electoral place, he is playing from the MLA Thrice.rpn Singh in Kushinagar in the east. Mr Singh teased a “new chapter” in his resignation letter after changing his Twitter bio and giving up his congressional credentials this morning. “Today, at one time, as we celebrate the founding of our great republic, I begin a new chapter in my political journey. Jai Hind,” he wrote. Mr Singh is likely to compete with Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently quit the BJP, and lead a small group of caste leaders. The source said Mr Singh, a prominent leader of the UP in the east, could enter the void left by Mr Maurya.
Mr Singh was elected as an MP from Kushinagar in 2009 but lost in 2014. Swami Prasad Maurya won the last two state polls from the Padrauna seat, first as a candidate of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and later as a candidate of the BJP . In the 2009 Lok Sabha poll, Swami Prasad Maurya came second after Singh.
Some reports said RPN Singh was upset by the party leadership over his accomplices being denied the race in Uttar Pradesh.
This is the second major exit from the Uttar Pradesh Congress after Jitin Prasada’s exit last year. Mr Prasada joined the BJP and later became a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath.
Congress has lost many top leaders over the past two years. The shock exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia in 2020 was one of the triggers for the party’s upheaval, leading 23 leaders to write to Sonia Gandhi demanding “visible and full-time” leadership and collective decision-making.
Mr Sindia, Mr Prasada and Mr Singh were all close aides of Rahul Gandhi. Another member of the now-depleted club, the Sachin Airmen, was recently reassured at the Cabinet location in Rajasthan for several months, but many saw it as a precarious truce.
