Karnataka’s parliamentary session, which begins on Monday, is expected to witness a high-pressure drama as the ruling BJP government and the opposition Congress spar over contentious issues such as the anti-conversion bill, the Mekedatu project and the hijab row.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot is scheduled to speak at the joint meeting on Monday.
The BJP is ready to submit a controversial anti-conversion bill at this session. It was adopted at the General Assembly during the winter session in Belagavi Suvarna Soudha.
The bill is expected to make a splash as Congress prepares to oppose it and the BJP is expected to pass the council, even if the latter lacks a one-seat majority.
Congress will also slam the state government for failing to start work on the Mekedatu project, which has been opposed by neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
It took out a giant padayatra during the third wave of Covid-19 urging an immediate start to the project, but stopped after court intervention.
The heated hijab row will also be one of the main points of confrontation between the ruling party and Congress and JD(S). While the case has gone to court, the issue will be bitterly debated in both houses of parliament.
The bitcoin scandal, which has been put on hold due to charges against the state’s top BJP leader, may also be brought up.
The 40% commission charged by the Contractors Association for all projects disposed of by the ruling BJP, the Mahadayi drinking water project and all projects that delay compensation to the families of Covid victims will be discussed to settle the ruling BJP.
Hariprasad.B.K., considered to be a member of Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s close circle, will start as opposition leader. Congress expects more from Harry Prasad, who is known for his sharp anti-Hindu rhetoric and stance.
On the other hand, sources from the Bharatiya Janata Party said that the party is all set to fight aggressively against the opposition, especially with regard to the hijab row and the anti-conversion bill.
