In India, Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January because on this day in 1949, Lieutenant General K.M. Cariappa took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. He took over from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. Cariappa also led the Indian Army in the Indo-Pak War (1947).
