Veteran singer-songwriter Bappi Lahiri died Wednesday morning. The veteran singer was taken to Criticare Hospital in Mumbai’s Pearl Lake area, where he took his last breath. He was released from hospital on Monday after a month of treatment, according to doctors. However, his health suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday. His lungs were infected and he had difficulty breathing. Currently, his remains are in his giant home.
Bappi Lahir, widely known in India as the “King of Disco”, was born in 1952 in Kolkata, West Bengal, to a family with a rich classical music tradition. He started his career as a music director at the age of 19. His father, Aparesh Lahiri, is a famous Bengali singer, and his mother, Bansari Lahiri, is a musician and singer, proficient in classical music and Shyama Sangeet.
He got his first chance in the Bengali film Daadu (1972) and the first Hindi film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973). The film that gave him a firm footing in Bollywood was Tahir Husain’s Hindi film Zakhmee (1975), for which he composed and played singer.
Lahiri dominated the music industry for several years. He played some of the most popular songs including I Am a Disco Dancer, Raat Baaki, Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re, Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost, Pag Ghoongroo, Tamma Tamma, Yaad Aa Raha Hai and many more.
