Before the New Year’s Eve BBL clash with the Adelaide forwards on Friday, December 31st, four players from the Sydney Thunder tested positive for COVID-19. According to reports, the Australian cricket team is investigating the matter and seeking more information to determine whether the game can be played or not in accordance with the regulations and guidelines set by the South Australian government.
The rest of the Thunder players are currently waiting for the results of the RT-PCR test, which is expected to end on Friday. But according to Fox Cricket reports, even if the result is negative, there are still doubts about the match at the Adelaide Oval Stadium. Needless to say, if Friday’s game is finally held, then the Thunder team led by Chris Green will be exhausted to a certain extent. After Thursday’s match between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Heat had to be postponed, the BBL has been damaged by COVID-19. Before the match at the Melbourne Docklands Stadium, a support staff member of the Stars contracted this ungodly virus.
“Although it is regrettable, given the exposure of the star lineup, the decision to postpone the game tonight is the only option available,” said Alistair Dobson, general manager of Big Bash Leagues.
“The Alliance has developed many biosafety protocols to ensure the safety of our participants and the advancement of the game. These protocols are regularly reviewed to deal with the risks in each state. Safety remains our top priority and we will cooperate with stars, Get them back on the court as soon as possible,” he said.
This is also the first time BBL has been affected by COVID-19 cases in a pandemic. Earlier, the Thunder’s Sam Whiteman also missed the game because he was seen as a close contact.
“This staff member is managed by the Melbourne Star’s medical staff after consultation with the Australian Cricket Association. We look forward to their return to the team in due course. We plan to conduct a key operation in Melbourne from January 2nd to 3rd. We hope to be more clear through the next 24 to 48 hours of the test at home,” said Blair Crouch, general manager of the star.
