BMC restarts construction of Rs 12,751-cr coastal road

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resumed construction work on a 10.58-km stretch of coastal road from the Princess Street flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link at an investment of Rs 12,751 crore.

The mega project will pass through Priyadarshini Park, Tata Garden, and Haji Ali where at least 600 trees will be cut and transplanted during the construction of the coastal road.

The civic body removed eight trees from Tata Gardens where at least 61 trees will be affected by the project, which will connect the coastal road through Tata Gardens to the existing internal road.

The concerned authority had approved the cutting and transplanting of trees coming in the way of the coastal road. According to activist Joru Bhathena, the BMC had said that it would transplant these trees in the proposed open spaces that would come up on the reclaimed land.

According to VS Nighote, Chief Engineer, Coastal Road Project, the proposed interchange branch of the Coastal Road would require the garden portion and its adjoining portion as, the civic body has secured clearance from the tree authority to cut and Plant a tree, which will pave the way for speedy execution of the road project.
