Budget’s MGNREGA spend cut perplexing, says India Ratings

Despite the struggles, cuts to rural job guarantee pledges in the budget were called “confusing” by India’s ratings agency on Friday.

Regarding the more than 20% cut in fund allocations to MGNREGA work for the second year in a row amid the pandemic, the domestic rating agency said: “The cuts… are confusing, especially with rural India struggling.”

Amid widespread welcoming of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget for its 35 per cent increase in capital expenditure, India Ratings said the focus is on less employment intensive sectors like roads and long gestation projects.
