Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said Friday that it is highly unlikely that people will be reinfected with the Omicron coronavirus variant for at least a few months. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was asked at a news conference if people who had been vaccinated with Omicron were protected from contracting the new variant of interest.

“Of course, there is reinfection. But if you develop a good immune response, you’re unlikely to get reinfected with the same variant again, at least for a few months,” the top immunologist said.

Fauci stressed that concerns about the unpredictability of variants have prompted authorities to identify a best-case scenario and a worst-case scenario. He said cases of reinfection occurred mostly in people who were infected with one variant and then infected with another variant, which is the best-case scenario.

“The worst case scenario we have to prepare for is this: we do get down to what we call ‘full control’, but we’re facing another surprising variant that’s so different Yes, it evades the accumulation of immune protection we get from vaccination and previous infection,” he added.
