Omicron, the newest and fastest-spreading variant of SARS-CoV-2, can infect the same person twice, and may not be uncommon as the world grapples with a new wave of the pandemic two years ago, now driven by Omicron. American epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding said that if the first Omicron infection was “low dose” and not enough to stimulate the immune system, then re-infection with Omicron is certainly possible. Another condition for reinfection with Omicron may be severely compromised immunity.
“There’s been a lot of anecdotes lately about new Omicron reinfections following recent Omicron infections. If your first Omicron infection was a low-dose infection that didn’t stimulate your immune system enough or your immune system was compromised, then it’s certainly possible Yes. Be careful people,” the epidemiologist tweeted.
The world is familiar with Covid-19 reinfection, as people who were once infected were found to be at risk of reinfection in the subsequent wave of the pandemic. People who have been vaccinated against Covid are also getting reinfected, which is nothing new, as vaccines do not prevent disease, but they do prevent severity and mortality. Reinfection of Omicron is a relatively new idea, as Omicron is the active variant in the current wave. If people become infected with Omicron again, it means they will be infected for a very short period of time. The body’s natural immunity after an infection should last at least seven to nine months. But Omicron reinfection showed two infections in a short period of time.
