Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday imposed a slew of sanctions on Russia and measures against Moscow after President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the “independence” of Ukrainian separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
“Russia’s illegal actions in Ukraine are an attack on democracy and a threat to world peace. Make no mistake: this is yet another invasion of a sovereign state. In coordination with allies and partners, Canada is taking the first round of economic sanctions in response,” Trudeau tweeted after announcing the sanctions at a news conference.
Russia’s illegal actions in Ukraine are an attack on democracy and a threat to world peace. Make no mistake: this is yet another invasion of a sovereign nation. In coordination with allies and partners, Canada is responding with the first round of economic sanctions.
Here’s everything you need to know:
(1.) Sanctions are implemented within the framework of the Regulations on Special Economic Measures (Russia) and Regulations on Special Economic Measures (Ukraine).
(2.) These apply to the Russian Duma Province, which voted to recognize the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk.
(3.) As part of these measures, a trade ban will be imposed on the Donetsk and Luhansk regions that are not controlled by the Ukrainian government. This means that Canadian nationals are effectively prohibited from conducting certain transactions in these areas.
(4.) These restrictions will prohibit direct and indirect transactions in Russian government debt.
(5.) This would impose restrictions on two Russian financial institutions to prevent Moscow from “further funding its aggressive actions.”
(6.) In addition, Ottawa will contribute up to 460 additional members of the armed forces to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
(7.) An additional 3,400 personnel from all components of the Canadian Armed Forces will also be deployed with the military coalition if required.
