Public health officials said infections from variants of the new coronavirus surpassed double digits in Canada on Friday, including cases reported in Toronto, the country’s largest city. Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tan, said that the country has so far found 11 cases of the new variant called Omicron, all involving people who have recently travelled abroad, and expressed concern about its spread. Again, remind people that unless we continue to reduce the spread and impact of the virus through vaccination and other protective layers, how quickly things will change in this pandemic,” Tan said.
A few hours after her statement, Reuters reported that the number of Omicron cases had risen to 15, including at least one case in York City. According to reports, a child under the age of 12 who had recently visited South Africa was diagnosed with Omicron.
Among the other cases reported in the country, three have been found in Toronto, two of whom have recently returned from a trip to Nigeria and the other has recently returned from Switzerland. A statement from the Toronto Public Health Agency said that it had been confirmed by whole-genome sequencing and was reported in Toronto.
At the same time, Tan emphasized the need to “be vigilant” now and in winter. Even if the variant is spreading, its “importance and impact” is still being evaluated.
