India suffered a defeat in their first ODI against South Africa on Wednesday and are aiming for a strong comeback when they play at Pal later today. The KL Rahul-led team looked rusty, and neither the bowling offense nor the batting order could stand up to Temba Bavuma’s team.
After Shikhar Dhawan (79) and Virat Kohli (51) set the stage for a chase of 297 runs, the middle order failed to continue the momentum as India trailed by 31 runs. Shreyas Iyer was picked ahead of No. 4 Suryakumar Yadav, but he failed to take advantage of the opportunity as he was dismissed for only 17 fewer deliveries.
There have been calls to change the XI as the series consists of just three ODIs, but former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Iyer cannot be dropped after “one defeat”.
“Can’t drop Shreyas Iyer after one defeat and bring in someone else. It’s not fair because he needs to get quite a few chances to prove himself,” Chopra said on his official YouTube channel.
