Tambaram, the gateway to Chennai in southern Tamil Nadu, is now a municipal corporation and an ordinance was promulgated has been issued for this, the state government said in Chennai on Thursday. The move comes after the Minister of Municipal Administration KN Nehru recently announced in Parliament that the city of Tambaram and the four adjacent municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats will be merged into one city municipal corporation. “Considering the rapid pace of urbanization in the state, the city’s local institutions must be reorganized,” said an explanatory statement published in the National Gazette.

The cities of Tambaram, Pallavapuram, Pammal, Anakaputhur, and Sembakkam in the southern part of Chennai, as well as town panchayats such as Chitlapakkam, Madambakkam, Perungaluthur, Peerkangaranai and Tiruneermalai, are rapidly urbanizing and they are continuous.

In addition, the city needs to be upgraded. The explanatory note stated that the infrastructure such as street lights, water supply, sewage treatment, solid waste management and roads in these places has met the wishes of the people.

The notice stated that a better administrative structure, human resources and comprehensive planning are needed to solve these problems. “Therefore, consolidation of these local bodies into a single larger urban local body, namely (Tambaram) City Municipal Corporation is considered to be essential. Besides offering an appropriate administrative set up, it will help in optimizing the resources for effective delivery of services to the general public,” the government said.
