China virus cases at highest level in nearly two years

On Monday, the number of Covid-19 cases in China reached its highest level since March 2020, as Beijing began efforts to contain the outbreak three weeks before the Winter Olympics and the Lunar New Year holiday.

China, where the virus first emerged in late 2019, has stuck to a strict policy of targeting zero Covid-19 cases. But its approach has come under pressure in recent weeks. A further 223 cases were reported on Monday, 80 in the virus-hit port city of Tianjin, and nine — including the highly transmitted Omicron variant — in the southern manufacturing hub of Guangdong.

An additional 68 cases were reported in central Henan province, which has placed millions of residents under partial lockdown and mass testing. The mainland city of Zhuhai, which borders Macau’s gambling hub, has told residents to avoid leaving the city after detecting a small number of people. China on Monday scrapped plans to sell tickets to the Beijing Winter Olympics to the public, allowing only invitees to see the move as part of strict virus control measures.

Pakistani health authorities on Monday announced the successful completion of a clinical trial of Chinese herbal medicine to treat Covid-19. Jinhua Qinggan Granules, a traditional Chinese medicine produced by Juxiechang (Beijing) Pharmaceuticals, has been used in China to treat Covid-19 patients.
