On Wednesday, the Twitter account of the union’s Information and Broadcasting (I&B) division was breached after its name was temporarily changed to that of entrepreneur Elon Musk before it was reinstated.
“@Mib_india account reinstated. Here’s a message to all followers,” the ministry, which has 1.4 million followers on Twitter, tweeted after the account was reinstated.
HT reached out to the ministry’s spokesman, the office of I&B Minister Anurag Thakur and Twitter, but did not receive an immediate response.
An official said an investigation would be conducted to find out what happened. After the account was hacked, several tweets were shared with bitcoin writing in the background with links to “amazing news”. HT could not confirm what these links lead to.
Last month, the Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefly hacked after a tweet claiming that India was “officially adopting Bitcoin as legal tender.” After a few minutes, the tweet was deleted. Twitter said it had taken all necessary steps to protect the compromised handle.
The Prime Minister’s Office had tweeted: “Prime Minister @narendramodi’s Twitter account was VERY briefly compromised…for a short period of time…any tweets shared must be ignored .”
