Covid-19 threat: New Year parties banned in Chennai

With the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases and the threat of Omicron, the police implemented new restrictions in Chennai before the New Year celebrations. Tamil Nadu has reported 619 Covid-19 cases, 11 of which were caused by the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. The number of Omicron cases in Tamil Nadu increased to 45. Two of them were cross-notified to Pondicherry and Kerala.

The Chennai police have asked people not to gather on any beaches in the city, including Binhai, Besanagar, Nilankale, and beaches along the East Coast Highway connecting Chennai and Kanyakumari.

It is forbidden to park vehicles near the beach. Starting at 9 p.m. on December 31, vehicles will also be banned on beach roads.

Police said that Kamaraj Road, Marina Beach Road and Besant Nagar Elliot Beach Road from the war memorial to the statue of Gandhi will be restricted. New Year celebrations are not allowed near the beach or along the coast.

Commercialized New Year celebrations held in resorts, farmhouses, clubs and auditoriums, and entertainment activities, dances, DJs and music parties in hotels, resorts, farmhouses and public places are also prohibited.

The official order states that celebrations are not allowed in the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), apartments, and villas. People are asked not to gather in these places to celebrate.

According to the government’s existing guidelines, hotels and restaurants with boarding facilities can only be open until 11pm. All hotel staff should be fully vaccinated.
