Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata has halted a Rs 1,000 crore expansion project as the passenger count has dropped dramatically due to the Covid-19 pandemic, creating uncertainty among airport authorities as to when the volume of passengers would reach pre-pandemic levels.
The airport lost 10 million passengers last year, and a profit of 600 million rupees was reduced to a loss of 200 million rupees.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) told the media that there is a shortage of funds due to the loss of revenue that led to the shelving of the Kolkata airport expansion project.
In February 2020, media sources reported that the AAI had sanctioned Phase 1 of the expansion plan. The expansion master plan, designed by Landrum and Brown, a US-based firm that specializes in aviation planning and development, was sanctioned in 2020.
