Cyclone Nivar: Depression formed over southwest Bay of Bengal, likely to intensify

A depression that was formed on Monday morning over the southwest Bay of Bengal and located around 630km away from Chennai coast is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm — which will be named Nivar – in the next 24 hours.

The system is expected to bring heavy rain to Chennai and neighbouring districts starting Tuesday.

“The storm is likely to move towards the Tamil Nadu – Puducherry coast and cross between Karaikal and Mamallapuram by November 25 afternoon,” said S Balachandran, deputy director general of India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Chennai. On Sunday, the IMD issued a warning of extremely very heavy rain in isolated places over Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur districts and Karaikal area and heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Trichy, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur districts and Puducherry. Heavy rain is likely to occur over isolated places in Chengalpet district.
