The term Sakandamata implies that she is the mother of Lord Skanda otherwise called Lord Kartikeya. Goddess Skandamata mounts on the brutal lion. She conveys child Murugan with six appearances on her lap. She is portrayed with four hands.
She conveys lotus blossoms in her upper two hands. She holds child Skanda in one of her correct hands and keeps the other right hand in Abhaya Mudra. She sits on a lotus blossom and in light of that Skandamata is otherwise called Goddess Padmasana. Thus, the fifth day of Navaratri is the day of Goddess Sakandamata.
