Air quality in Delhi was in the “poor” category on Monday morning as mercury was expected to hover around 27 degrees Celsius. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 251 at 7am on Monday, compared to 253 on Sunday.
Air quality is likely to worsen over the next 24 hours until winds are expected to pick up from Tuesday. Sunday’s AQI was down from Saturday’s “moderate” category, according to the Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research System.
“Lower winds are likely on Monday, resulting in reduced ventilation and the AQI is expected to deteriorate to the upper end of the ‘poor’ or the lower end of the ‘very poor’ category on Monday.”
The minimum is expected to rise to around 9C, two notches above the city’s high of 26.4C on Sunday and 3C above normal.
The weather in Delhi is clear and the cold is ebbing, resulting in warmer daytime temperatures. “The maximum temperature after the last rain was about 21-22 degrees and now it is almost as high as 27 degrees. It is likely to rise further in the coming week,” said R K Jenamani, a scientist at the Indian Meteorological Department. “The minimum [temperature] will also be around 9 to 10 degrees next week, making for a warmer night.”
