Health Minister Satyendra Jain said that Delhi expects to report as many as 5,500 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases on Tuesday, adding that the positive rate is expected to reach 8.5%.
He further stated that the weekend curfew imposed in view of the increasing number of Covid cases should not be considered a lockdown.
In the past two weeks, with the emergence of the Omicron variant, there has been a surge in daily Covid cases in the capital.
According to the Daily Health Brief, Delhi recorded 4,099 new Covid-19 cases within 24 hours on Monday, and the positive rate jumped to 6.46%.
The city’s active cases have reached 10,986, and the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases is now 14,58,220. In the past 24 hours, Delhi has also witnessed a Covid-related death, bringing the death toll to 25,100.
In order to contain the recent surge, the city government has re-imposed a number of restrictions, including weekend and night curfews. Earlier in the day, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia stated that buses and subway trains will once again be fully occupied to avoid congestion outside subway stations and bus stations. In the previous order, the government reduced the passenger capacity in buses and subways to 50%, which eventually resulted in long queues outside the stations and crowded bus stops.
The government also stipulates that private offices must be equipped with 50% of the labor force, and all government officials will work from home except those engaged in basic services.
At the same time, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that he tested positive for the virus and had mild symptoms. A day ago, he delivered a speech at a large election rally in Uttarakhand. Although the number of infections in the country is increasing, no one can be seen wearing a mask there.
