In its latest statement on Saturday, India said that in Ukraine, the situation at border checkpoints is “sensitive” and that citizens trying to leave the country should not proceed without coordination with government officials as it seeks to increase Evacuation efforts. About 16,000 Indians are believed to be in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia on Thursday. The offensive has entered its third day, with the Kremlin targeting the capital, Kiev.
“All Indian citizens in Ukraine are advised not to go to the border post without prior coordination with the Indian government border post (emergency number has been set up) and the emergency number of the Indian Embassy in Kiev,” the government said in a statement.
“The situation at various border checkpoints is sensitive and the embassy is continuing to work with our embassies in neighbouring countries to coordinate the evacuation of our citizens,” she added.
The government has demanded that staying in western Ukrainian cities with water, food, shelter and basic facilities is “safer and preferable than reaching border points without full knowledge”.
People in the east are advised to avoid “unnecessary exercise” as much as possible.
With Ukrainian airspace closed, India established overland routes with the help of Hungary, Romania, Poland and the Slovak Republic. On Friday, sources said the cost of the evacuation would be borne by the government.
The first group of Indians from Ukraine arrived in Romania on Friday, the foreign ministry said. “The first people evacuated from Ukraine
You can reach Romania through the Suceava border crossing. Our team in Suceava will now facilitate the journey to Bucharest so they can continue to India,” MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.
During the evacuation, Secretary of State S. Jaishankar has been in contact with his counterparts in Ukraine, Romania and other countries.
