Samajwadi Party (SP) chairman Akhilesh Yadav will contest his first parliamentary election in Karhal constituency in the party’s stronghold of Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh, according to the party leader. But he is not the only one to choose a home for himself in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh parliamentary elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to field Yogi Adityanath from his home ground Gorakhpur. Not only is the move to ensure victory for the leaders, but both the SP and BJP have their own strategies behind them, according to Hindustan Times sister publication Livehindustan. The impact the leader will have on the overall election is also being kept in mind, Livehindustan said.

Deputy Chairman Keshav Maurya also unfolded from Sirathu (Kaushambi), where he won the 2012 election as Phulpur’s MP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

He is currently a member of the UP Legislative Council, along with Yogi Adityanath.

Another big shot, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, has made it clear that she will not run for elections. Congress chief Priyanka Gandhi, who is leading the party’s campaign this time, has so far been silent on joining the electoral battle. Why did BJP choose Gorakpur seat as Yogi?

Yogi Adityanath is a five-time BJP MP from Gorakhpur. He led from here until taking over UP in 2017. Livehindustan quoted the top BJP leader as saying that Adityanath’s candidacy from Gorakhpur could have implications for at least 50 parliamentary seats in the Purvanchal district.

Why did Akhilesh choose Karhal?

From the very beginning, this seat was a stronghold for those who followed Samajwadi’s ideology. The first election was won from here by the Praja Socialist Party. However, Akhilesh could also choose to poll from another seat dominated by Yadav – Gopalpur in Azamgarh.

Instead of Purvanchal, he chose the seat that prepared the political base for the Saifai family. The Karhal seat on Yadav’s belt is considered very safe for SP chiefs.
