The company said on Thursday that Facebook is testing ways for creators to make money through Facebook groups, such as users paying for exclusive access to content or conversations within subgroups. Facebook, which recently changed its name to Meta, said the test is part of its broader paid subscription work. This social media company is one of many technology giants, and they have been committed to attracting social media creators and a large number of followers through payments and new tools.

Facebook has been focusing on building communities in recent years as a strategy to increase site participation. The company said that group administrators will be able to operate e-commerce stores to sell goods or create community fundraising activities, which can offset the cost of operating groups.

On Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said that creators will be able to share custom links, allowing them to accept payments directly, only to pay Apple’s subscription fee. Facebook launched a subscription service last year.

The company announced a series of updates to its Groups products during its live community summit. It said that the sub-group function, which can be free or paid, will allow members to break within the group to focus on certain areas or topics. Facebook groups have been censored by lawmakers and researchers who believe they provide a closed space for health misinformation, violent speech, and extremism to spread without proper supervision.
