The social media giant said on Monday that Facebook Inc plans to hire 10,000 employees in the European Union in the next five years to help build the so-called metaverse – a nascent online world where people live and communicate in shared virtual spaces.
This will be an important step for the company towards this concept, which has been touted by the top boss Mark Zuckerberg in recent months.
In September, Facebook promised to invest 50 million US dollars to build the meta universe, Roblox Corp and “Fortnite” manufacturer Epic Games and other companies have long established a foothold here.
The company earlier launched a test of a new virtual reality remote work application, and users of the company’s Oculus Quest 2 headset can hold meetings as their avatar version.
Facebook also said in July that it is creating a product team to study the metaverse, which will become part of Facebook Reality Labs, its augmented reality and virtual reality groups.
The company said: “This investment (in the new job) is a vote of confidence in the strength of the European technology industry and the potential of European technology talent.”
“Europe is very important to Facebook.”
