Officials said the first Omicron case was found in the northeast on Monday, after a person who had previously returned from Tanzania tested positive in Manipur.
“After testing positive for Covid-19…On the eighth day of his arrival in India, a sample of a male passenger who returned from Tanzania on December 13 was sent for genome sequencing….The report…confirmed that he was infected with the Omicron variant ,” said K Rajo Singh, director of state health services. He added that the infected person is currently in Imphal’s isolation facility and is currently asymptomatic.
As the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is spreading rapidly, Singh asks people to follow Covid-related behaviors and wear masks. He asked people not to panic because the government is taking all necessary measures.
Singh said testing, contact tracing and other arrangements related to Covid-19 have been strengthened.
Health officials have been monitoring the 480 people who arrived in Manipur from abroad. Among them, 174 have completed the 14-day quarantine and the test results are negative. The remaining 306 people are still under surveillance.
