Food for 82.3 million poor lost during transit in 4 years, Parliament panel says

According to the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, more than 4.11 lakh tonnes of wheat and rice were wasted in the country in the last four years due to shifting and sporadic thefts.

According to the report, the wastage of subsidized food grains was about ₹ 1,109.82 crore, which could feed 8.23 crore people.

The report also pointed out that the loss of food grains in the last four years to October 2020 amounted to an estimated ₹1,109.82 crore, and the subsidized items were enough to feed 82.3 million people if properly distributed.

The Center provides around 5 kg of wheat rice at subsidized rates under its Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
