Maine Pyar Kiya is unquestionably one of Bollywood’s most iconic flicks. This is, without a doubt, the film that made Salman Khan a star and helped him get a foothold in the hearts of his fans. Indeed, his followers remember this film, its music, and its dialogues, and they never grow old. But can you image how different this movie would be if Salman wasn’t in it? In today’s flashback Friday, we bring you a clip from Deepak Tijori’s interview, in which he disclosed that he was competing for the main role in this film with the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor.
Yes! Yes, you read that correctly. Deepak Tijori, a well-known personality in the 1990s, said in an interview with Bollywood Hungama that he and Salman Khan both auditioned for the role of Prem in Maine Pyar Kiya. He was competing, but subsequently Sooraj Barjatya informed him that the Barjatya family had opted to go forward with Salman after watching the rushes. He went on to say that he and Salman were the only two guys in the running for the part of Prem. “They even informed me that if I was chosen, they wanted to change my name on the screen and talk about how they wanted to launch me,” the actor continued.
Meanwhile, Maine Pyar Kiya was released in 1989 and was Salman’s first leading role. It also marked Bhagyashree’s acting debut. The Sooraj Barjatya-directed film went on to become one of India’s highest-grossing films at the time. Bhagyashree, on the other hand, stated shortly after that she was leaving the industry after only one film to marry Himalaya Dassani.
