On Monday, former India captain Sunil Gavaska backed the 31-year-old’s return to the Indian squad after a seven-year hiatus to fill the role of the fast bowling all-rounder who has been out of action since Hadik Pandya’s injury. The team has been missing this role.

Dhawan made his international debut for India in 2016, playing only three matches in the same year – two ODIs and one T20I – before dropping out of the competition. However, following the impressive Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021/22 season, the all-rounder in Himachal Pradesh has started to consider the all-rounder role.

He has become the second-highest scorer in the tournament after Ruturaj Gaikwad with 458 runs in eight innings in Himachal Pradesh with 76.33 over five and a half centuries. He also picked 16 wickets in the game, making him the third-highest wicket ever.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Gavaskar stressed the importance of India’s all-rounders, praising them as the key behind the two World Cup victories.

“Rishi Dhawan has played for India before, maybe 5 or 6 years ago. And his performance this time… You’re right, India does need a fast bowling all-rounder. I keep saying that, India’s performance in the World Cup Success … look at 1983, 1985, 2011 and 2013 … as long as there is an all-around player on the team, the captain and the selection committee have more options,” he said.

Gavaskar believes that if management can speak to Dhawan about his role when given the opportunity, he will definitely make the most of it.

“So, the state of Rishi Dhawan this season, I definitely think he should be given a chance, a responsibility, should be told that we depend on you and that India needs an all-rounder, one who can bat in the 6 or 7 and open or Be the first to change bowlers, if he says so, then even he will make the most of it,” he said.
