Ghajini Didn’t Initially Choose Aamir Khan: The reason why Ghajini, which went on to become one of the year’s biggest hits, is still one of the most talked-about Bollywood movies is because of its captivating story and outstanding cast.

Still, without Aamir Khan, what would it be like? It turns out that AR Murugadoss had other ideas for the Hindi version of the movie and did not initially choose Aamir Khan. He had, however, in mind casting a “short-tempered” superstar. Who can you guess? Who Was Director AR Murugadoss’s First Choice for Ghajini, If Not Aamir Khan?

In case you were wondering, the director’s initial pick for Ghajini was none other than Salman Khan. But Aamir Khan was recommended by actor Pradeep Rawat, who portrayed the movie’s antagonist.

Salman Khan is a favourite of Murugadoss, but Pradeep told Siddharth Kannan that he didn’t believe Salman would be the best option. He stated, “I thought in my mind ‘Salman is short-tempered and Murugdoss doesn’t speak in Hindi or English.’” Back then, he didn’t even have a personality.”

The actor went on to say, “I felt that Aamir would be a good fit for the part since he has a calm demeanour and treats everyone with respect. I have not witnessed Aamir yell or scream at anyone in the last twenty-five years. He has never used foul words or treated someone disrespectfully. Therefore, I reasoned that Salman’s character would make things too difficult or complicated.”

Aamir Khan and Asin, who won the Filmfare Best Debut Female Award, play the lead roles in Ghajini. The film centres on the romance between the two characters; nevertheless, a regrettable event resulted in the latter’s death, upending Aamir’s character’s life and compelling him to get retribution.

Ghajini, the 2008 blockbuster that redefined action-thrillers in Bollywood, is synonymous with Aamir Khan’s intense performance and chiseled physique. However, director AR Murugadoss recently revealed that the role was initially not meant for Aamir. The first choice for the film was none other than South superstar Chiranjeevi.

In an interview, Murugadoss shared that he had envisioned Chiranjeevi as the lead when adapting his Tamil hit Ghajini for Bollywood. “Chiranjeevi Sir has a tremendous screen presence and charisma, and I believed he would do justice to the character’s depth and intensity,” he said. However, due to scheduling conflicts and other commitments, the superstar couldn’t take on the project, leading the director to approach Aamir Khan.

Aamir, known for his meticulous approach to roles, transformed himself completely to play the short-term memory-loss patient seeking revenge. His dedication, including an intense physical transformation and deep dive into the emotional layers of the character, earned him critical acclaim and made Ghajini the first Bollywood film to cross the ₹100-crore mark.

Interestingly, Chiranjeevi’s absence from the project didn’t diminish his admiration for it. The actor reportedly appreciated Aamir’s performance and the film’s success, proving that the role ultimately found the right actor to make it iconic.

Fans of both actors are now imagining how Chiranjeevi would have brought his own magic to the character. Regardless of this “what if” scenario, Ghajini remains a landmark in Indian cinema, a testament to AR Murugadoss’s storytelling and Aamir’s unmatched dedication.
