According to a report by a market research company, despite the shortage of components, global shipments of smart speakers and smart displays increased by 10% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2021, setting a record for the third quarter. It added that a total of 39.3 million units were shipped during this period. Amazon still maintains its top spot, but there has been no year-on-year growth in the most recent quarter. Due to the increase in shipments of Google Nest Hub, the company ranked second, followed by Baidu, Alibaba, Apple and Xiaomi.

According to the latest research on smart speakers and screen services by Strategy Analytics, the impact of global component shortages has begun to affect the smart speaker supply chain, and Chinese suppliers have suffered the most due to component shortages. Despite these limitations, the total shipments of smart speakers and smart displays have increased year-on-year. However, starting from the second quarter of 2021, quarterly growth has been basically flat, with global shipments of 39 million units (39.3 million units in the third quarter of 2021).

“China usually accounts for 30% to 40% of the global market every quarter, so the challenges experienced by Alibaba, Baidu and Xiaomi will be a measure of China’s management supply chain problems,” said David Watkins, Strategy Analytics Director of Smart Home.

The market research company said that the sales of smart speakers increased by about 7% year-on-year. Amazon ranks first in the overall smart speaker and smart display market rankings. Followed by Google, Baidu, Alibaba, Apple and Xiaomi. Driven by the HomePod Mini speaker, Apple achieved a year-on-year growth of 92%. Followed by Google (18%) and Baidu (15%). Compared with the third quarter of 2020, Amazon hardly saw any growth.

As far as smart displays are concerned, it is reported that sales in the third quarter of 2021 have soared by nearly 19% to 11.2 million units. Strategy Analytics stated that 18 of the top 50 models sold this quarter were smart displays. Google’s Nest Hub is the best-selling smart display in the third quarter of 2021, with shipments of 1.5 million units. It is followed by Amazon’s second-generation Echo Show 5 and Baidu’s Xiaodu 1c.

Google’s Nest Mini smart speaker is the best-selling device, with shipments of more than 5 million units. In terms of shipments, Apple’s HomePod Mini and Amazon’s fourth-generation Echo Dot ranked second and third respectively.
