A district court in Surat has instructed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear in court on Friday to record his statement in a criminal defamation case brought against him regarding Modi’s remarks. Legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Surat Purnesh Modi filed a lawsuit against Rahul in April 2019 under Articles 499 and 500 of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) on defamation.

Purnesh claimed in the complaint that Rahul Gandhi slandered the entire Modi community in a speech at a polling rally in 2019.

According to reports, Rahul Gandhi spoke at a rally in Koral, Karnataka on April 13, 2019. Before the People’s House poll, Rahul Gandhi reportedly asked: ” Nilav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi…Why do they all use Modi as the common surname.

He appeared in court in October 2019 and pleaded not guilty to his comments.
