During frequent Covid-19 lockdowns, due to unhealthy eating patterns and increased stress levels, the prevalence of high blood pressure has increased across all age groups, and maintaining high or high blood pressure is now more important than ever important. It is a lifestyle disease that is affecting more than 30% of adults worldwide or more than 1 billion people worldwide, especially during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
High stress levels, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits are some of the leading causes of high blood pressure in young adults. Long-term high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for serious conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, vision loss, chronic kidney disease and even dementia.
High blood pressure or high blood pressure has become a serious problem due to our lifestyle and our preference for junk food, irregular sleep patterns and stress being the main cause of this chronic disease. Dr Deepak Verma, Consultant Internal Medicine, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad, shared, “The rise in hypertension among young adults, especially in urban areas, is worrying and is of great concern for two reasons – a) uncontrolled high blood pressure can have fatal consequences such as heart attack or stroke; b) it is a preventable lifestyle disease that makes people more susceptible to Covid-19 regardless of age.”
