Carbs are carbohydrates that are found in high protein food, grains, fat, vegetables, and fruits. Food that we eat has different types of carbohydrates and their amount varies as well.
There are four types of carbohydrates:
- Natural (Lactose in milk)
- Simple refined (sugar)
- Complex Natural (whole grains)
- Complex Refined (white flour)
Common sources of natural carbohydrates are :
- Grains
- Fruits
- Nuts
- Vegetables
- Legumes
Complex carbohydrates are digested slowly and refined carbohydrates affect the blood sugar level. Our body uses carbohydrates for energy and during digestion, complex carbohydrates are broken down in the form of Glucose which goes to blood to form blood glucose. To help the blood glucose enter the body cells insulin is released and extra glucose is stored in our liver and muscles and fat. Low carb diets help to burn the stored fat leading to weight loss.
Low carb diets are low in carbohydrates that are generally helpful in losing weight and have many other health benefits. Consuming low carbs does not mean eating limited types of food rather eating a limited amount of food. When you start a low-carb diet, you need to change your eating habits and monitor your carbs type and amount. You can enjoy every type of food you wish including fast food but be careful with the amount.
Low carb diets that have protein and good carbs can help in lowering heart diseases and type 2 diabetes. It can also help in improving blood sugar levels and managing cholesterols. It is a great way to live a healthy life without compromising your taste buds.
