Samajwadi party chairman Akhilesh Yadav is trying to devise a new social electoral package to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh parliamentary elections. The resignations of Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chauhan are seen as the result of the same social engineering bid.
The BJP cobbled together a winning model in 2017 by focusing on non-Yadav Other Backward Class (OBC) voters in Uttar Pradesh. Now, with the resignations of Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chauhan, this caste equation may be against the BJP and work for Akhilesh Yadav.
Akhilesh Yadav is doing everything in his power to win the BJP’s non-Yadav OBC leader before Uttar Pradesh assembly elections start next month. The switch of Lalji Verma and Ramachal Rajbhar ahead of Maurya and Chauhan appears to be part of the same strategy.
Swami Prasad Maurya is considered the second most non-Yadav OBC face in the BJP after Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. While the official status of Swami Prasad Maurya is unclear, there are indications that he will join the Samajwadi party and oppose the BJP in the elections.
