BENGALURU: Heavy rains battered large parts of Bengaluru, killing at least two people and leaving many others scrambling for shelter. Only one of three workers trapped in a flooded pipeline in Ullal Upanagara managed to escape.
On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange alert for Bengaluru’s urban and rural districts, predicting heavy rain for the next 4-5 days.
Several parts of India’s IT capital were inundated after Tuesday night’s unprecedented rainfall, which lasted until early Wednesday morning, causing property damage and despair among the city’s 12 million residents.
People and vehicles were forced to wade to safety in areas such as Nayandahalli, Wilson Garden, Silk Board, and Cambridge layout, among others.
Bengaluru city received 114.6 mm of rain, while the international airport area received 65.6 mm, according to the IMD. Rainfall totaled 86.4 millimetres in the HAL airport area.
“Mostly cloudy skies. Rain and thundershowers, with heavy rain possible at times. The forecast for the next 24 hours stated that “maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 28 and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.”
Rainfall totaled around 155 mm in places like Horamavu, adding to the misery of residents who lack proper roads and civic infrastructure.
