India Covid-19 cases: Daily caseload drops to 149,394; total deaths top 500,000

Daily Covid-19 cases in India fell sharply on Friday, with as many as 149,394 people testing positive for the viral disease, data released by the Union Health Ministry showed. That’s 13% higher than Thursday, when the daily total of infections was 172,433. At the same time, the number of related deaths rose by 1,072, compared with 1,008 a day earlier, the announcement showed.

This brings the cumulative number of infections to 41,952,712, of which 500,055 have died. India is now the third country after the US (896,557) and Brazil (630,301) to have more than 500,000 deaths from the virus.

The total case count also includes a total of 40,017,088 recoveries, of which 246,674 patients recovered in the past 24 hours. The total number of active cases was 1,435,569, a decrease of 98,352 infections.

Recovery, active cases, and deaths accounted for 95.39%, 3.42%, and 1.19% of the cumulative total, respectively.

In terms of vaccinations, nearly 1.7 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered since the nationwide vaccination started on January 16 last year. As many as 5,558,760 of them have been administered in the past 24 hours, the ministry’s bulletin shows.
