India logs 238,018 fresh Covid-19 cases, daily active count drops below 1 lakh

India recorded 238,018 new Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, data from the Union Health Ministry showed on Tuesday. Daily active cases rose by 80,287, falling below 100,000 for the first time in nearly two weeks. Since yesterday’s tally, the number of daily infections has decreased by 20,071, while the daily positivity rate is 14.43% compared to 14.41% yesterday.

A whopping 310 deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s death toll to 486,761. The new deaths include 72 from Kerala and 33 from West Bengal.

The announcement shows that there are now 17,36,628 active cases, while the number of recoveries climbed to more than 35 million in the past 24 hours, with 157,421 improving. The recovery rate has reached 94.09%.

The total rose to 37,180,271, including 8,891 new cases of Omicron, which has been pushing more people across the country to self-isolate.

India crossed the grim milestone of 20 million on May 4 and June 23.

Among the worst-hit cities, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata appear to have stabilized the Covid-19 curve, while several others continue to see surges. A total of 705 million Covid tests have been conducted to date, including 16,49,143 tests in the past 24 hours.
