India reported 1,94,720 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up 15.8% from 168,000 yesterday. Government figures this morning put the daily positivity rate – or the number of infections per 100 tests – at 11.5 per cent.
The country has so far reported 4,868 cases of infection with Omicron, the highly circulating variant of the coronavirus first detected in South Africa. Maharashtra has the most cases in Omicron with 1,281, followed by Rajasthan with 645.
India has delivered more than 1.53 billion doses of the vaccine since vaccination began, marking a major milestone in the fight against COVID-19.
At least 120 territories in 29 states and federal territories reported a 10 percent weekly positivity rate in the third wave of the pandemic.
India is providing booster doses to frontline healthcare workers and those over 60 with comorbidities. Still, the Omicron variant is “almost unstoppable” and everyone will eventually get infected with it.
