India under Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma was an IPL all-stars squad rather than a well-rounded group with T20 expertise.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the biggest Twenty20 cricket tournaments in the world. And while the national team has had some success in the format – most notably winning the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 – they have never been able to replicate that success in the IPL. In fact, in the eleven seasons of the IPL, the Indian team has only made it to the final three times.

So when it was announced that former captain Rahul Dravid and current vice-captain Rohit Sharma would be leading an all-star squad of Indian players in this year’s IPL, there was a lot of excitement. Finally, it seemed, India would have a team that was not only full of world-class talent, but also had the experience and expertise to win the tournament.

Sadly, that excitement was short-lived. The team, which was christened the India IPL All-Stars, lost all three of their matches in the group stage and were knocked out of the tournament without even making it to the playoffs.

There are many factors that contributed to the team’s disappointing performance, but the lack of Twenty20 experience was undoubtedly one of the biggest. With the exception of Dravid and Sharma.India Under Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma: An IPL All-Stars Squad, Not a T20 Specialist Unit

India’s performance in recent T20 tournaments, particularly under the leadership of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, has sparked discussions about the team’s composition. Many experts and fans believe the squad resembled an IPL all-stars lineup rather than a well-rounded T20 unit tailored for the demands of international cricket.

Lack of Specialized T20 Players

India’s squad, packed with big names and IPL stars, seemed to prioritize reputation over specialization. While players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have proven their mettle in the IPL.

their approach to T20 cricket often leaned more toward anchoring innings, which isn’t always ideal in the fast-paced international T20 arena. The absence of dynamic finishers, pinch-hitters, and powerplay specialists highlighted a gap in India’s T20 planning.

Selection Over Dependable Roles

Instead of building a squad based on roles—such as explosive openers, death-overs specialists, or middle-order finishers—India appeared to rely on big names who dominate IPL stats. However, success in the IPL, which involves playing on Indian pitches against domestic and overseas players, doesn’t always translate to success in global tournaments on varied conditions.

Overemphasis on Experience

While experience is valuable, India’s reliance on veteran players often came at the cost of backing young, fearless talent. The omission of players like Umran Malik, Sanju Samson, and Rahul Tripathi, who bring unique skill by contrast, embraced bold strategies and relied on players who excel in high-pressure T20 scenarios.

Tactical Gaps in Leadership

Under Rahul Dravid’s coaching and Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the tactical approach seemed outdated at times. Rotating strike and pacing innings—a strategy rooted in ODI cricket—dominated over aggressive power-hitting and bowling strategies. This resulted in India falling short against teams with modern, attacking T20 mindsets.

The Road Ahead

India needs a clear shift in T20 planning to compete at the global level. This includes selecting a team with defined roles, embracing fearless cricketers who thrive in high-intensity matches, and adopting strategies that align with modern T20 cricket. A fresh approach, coupled with an overhaul of leadership strategies, could see India return as a dominant force in the shortest format.
