India’s daily record of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) continued its downward trend on Tuesday after 255,874 infections were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry. That’s more than 50,000 fewer than the 306,064 cases recorded on Monday. The total number of cases in the country is nearly 39.8 million.
Tuesday’s daily record was the lowest since January 19, when 282,970 cases were reported.
However, the new death toll soared to 614, taking the total to 490,462. As many as 267,753 patients have recovered in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 37,071,898.
Active cases have dropped to 2,236,842, or 5.69% of the caseload.
On Monday, 439 people died and 243,495 recovered.
The daily Covid-19 positivity rate also fell to 15.52%, but the weekly positivity rate edged up to 17.17%, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. The Ministry of Health added that the overall recovery rate was 93.15 per cent.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,649,108 samples were tested for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours and the total has climbed to 718,802,433
The country’s vaccine coverage is close to 1.63 billion, with more than 6.2 million doses delivered to eligible beneficiaries in the past 24 hours. More than 42.7 million children aged 15 to 18 received their first dose of the vaccine, and 8,802,178 beneficiaries have received the preventive dose to date.
