‘India’s middle-order looked little short’: Manjrekar suggests ‘wholesome’ change after batting collapse in Paarl

Half a century after Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, India’s inexplicable mid-level collapse saw the team lose to South Africa in the round of 31 in the first ODI of a three-match series. India got off to a solid start with a 297-run victory, with Dhawan adding 51 and Kohli scoring the same in his first game after giving up Test captains.

But after Kohli’s departure, India’s innings dropped from 152/3 to 214/8, eventually trailing South Africa by 31 points. Debut Venkatesh Iyer died after scoring just two goals in the South African game.

Sanjay Manjrekar called for Surya Kumar Yadav to be included in the squad after India’s defeat and their batting slump, saying the mid-tier looked a little short in batting. Contributions from Rishabh Pant (16 of 22 overs) and Shreyas Iyer (17 of 17 overs) did not matter as India finished with 265 of 8 overs in 50 overs.
