Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms said it was concerned about upcoming privacy legislation in India that seeks to store and process data locally, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
“Some countries, such as India, are considering or have passed legislation implementing data protection requirements or requiring local storage and processing of data or similar requirements, which could increase the cost and complexity of our services,” the company said.
It added that new legislation or regulatory decisions limiting its ability to collect and use information from minors could also result in restrictions on its ability to advertise services or provide products and services to minors in certain jurisdictions.
The parliamentary joint committee to study the Personal Data Protection Bill 2019 presented its report in December. The committee’s report and draft legislation recommended that, under Section 33 of the Act, sensitive personal data should continue to be stored in India and that its transfer outside India should only be permitted under certain conditions set out in Section 34.
